Finding someone who doesn’t cough or sneeze during the year is a miracle. Therefore, especially now catching flu or a cold is not rocket science. The trick is to soak them up so that they end up on a simple infection. For both of these diseases, the most troublesome is cough, and it is the one that most often causes complications in the form of bronchitis and pneumonia. However, doing the right thing can help us not only to avoid them but also to feel good faster.

Where does the cough come from?

The cough helps the throat, larynx, trachea, and bronchi clear of everything that is found in them (and is not just air). It is the body’s response to irritation or damage to the receptors of the receptors that are in the airway mucosa. Factors that most often irritate these receptors are bacteria and viruses (germs damage the epithelium and expose cough receptors).

When we start coughing, we often reach for the first syrup or … downplay it at all. It’s a mistake, the untreated cough usually gets worse. Not only does it bother us in everyday life, but it can also be a sign of a disease that requires treatment with e.g. antibiotics.

How to stop coughing?

First of all, let’s make sure that the air in our bedroom is properly moisturized. Before going to bed, eat a teaspoon of buckwheat honey or drink warm tea with a little honey. However, if we prefer preparations from the pharmacy, we can take syrup or tablets in the evening (e.g. with codeine).

In order not to bother at night due to coughing, do not forget to moisturize the throat throughout the day. Let’s drink a lot of drinks (of course, avoid very cold and carbonated ones) and take syrups from time to time.

A persistent chronic cough may be a signal of allergy or asthma. If his attacks bother you at night, you may be allergic to dust. Attacks of coughing during the day and accompanying shortness of breath, e.g. after physical exertion, may be evidence of asthma. Always consult a doctor.

Expectorant medicines will bring you quick relief. A more serious illness manifests itself in so-called barking, bothersome cough. If left untreated, it can last for many weeks and cause serious complications, e.g. purulent pneumonia.

You can also try syrups: they thin the secretions and make it easier to remove. Modern preparations already work within a quarter of an hour after taking them and can be used at different times of the day.

If you have a dry cough, then you may need an antibiotic. This cough should not be suppressed, but it can be alleviated.
